Spotlight On: Joshua McCammon – Technical Apprentice 1 Year on

Joshua McCammon is a Technical Apprentice with Venture 1, his first 'Spotlight On' was a little over a year ago, today we catch up with him about his time since!

Reflecting on the Past Year: How has your role evolved since we last caught up with you? Any new responsibilities or projects you're excited about?

Over the past year I feel the biggest change is the taking on of more responsibilities. From communicating with stakeholders to handling more tickets, I've had the opportunity to get more stuck in and involved in the day to day tasks of the helpdesk.

Career Highlights: What's been a standout moment or achievement for you in the past year at Venture 1?

What stands out to me the most is more so the leap in conversing more with our clients. As an apprentice there was the initial worry of "saying the wrong thing" for example, but things have turned out better than I anticipated. Just "doing it" more has helped grow my confidence in this area and I no longer see such a mental barrier when carrying out this aspect of my work.

New Skills and Growth: Have you learned any new skills, completed certifications, or taken on new challenges? How have these helped you in your role?

In the time that I've been at Venture1 I've picked up a few different skills but mostly I would highlight my overall growth in using Azure. I feel a lot more confident with the portal and general usage of its services.

Company Culture Impact: Has the company culture changed or grown in any way you find positive over the last year?

The company culture has had a positive impact in that there is a great emphasis on coming together as a Team. Weekly knowledge shares, sit down tutorial sessions and general helpfulness amongst employees has created an atmosphere where you really do feel supported with the work you need to do.

Favourite Project: What's a recent project you've enjoyed working on, and what made it interesting?

I recently helped set up a mini-pc to run Teams with an interactive touch screen. I enjoyed working on this project as it involved more than just setting up the pc but also ordering parts/equipment, adjusting fixtures and cabling etc. The end result was a setup that anyone in the office can now use for meetings/presentations.

Personal Growth: Outside of work, what personal goals or passions have you been pursuing recently?

I've recently got back into the gym, so that's been a good space for me to continue challenging myself.

Future Goals: What are your professional or personal goals for the upcoming year?

Professionally it would be to firstly finish up the apprenticeship which doesn't have that long left, and then to continue developing the skills that I have acquired along the way. Personally, it would be nice to travel a bit more so I would look into grabbing some good deals to visit places I haven't been to before.

Advice for Newcomers: For those who are new to the team or thinking of joining, what advice would you give?

To new starters my advice would be to enjoy the process. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; the team is really supportive and everyone really wants to see you succeed. To anyone thinking of joining I would say go for it! There aren't many places to work like Venture1

Quick-Fire Questions: Finish these sentences:

  1. My favourite way to unwind after a busy day: Is a good film/comedy

  2. If I could pick up any skill overnight: It would be to be able to cycle with no hands!

Superpower of Choice: If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it?

It would be the ability to teleport; so that I could travel anywhere around the world (and have a quick commute)

Perfect Weekend: Describe your perfect weekend – what would you do if you had no obligations?

Spending time with the Mrs; going to the cinema or to an arcade.

Many thanks to Joshua for participating in our 'Spotlight On' this month, we wish him the very best for the year ahead! - Venture 1 Click Team.
